Adolescent Focused Motivational Interviewing Course

The Title V Maternal and Child Health Program is proud to announce the Adolescent Focused Motivational Interviewing (MI) course presented by Mary Minten, PhD, MFT, CST.

The virtual session will connect teen and young adult brain changes to core motivational interviewing skills. Participants will actively engage in experiential practice and can discuss difficult cases and barriers.

Learning Objectives

Following the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Identify at least one aspect of the MI Spirit (PACE)
  • Express empathy to a patient
  • Recognize the difference between change talk, sustain talk, and discord in patient language
  • Describe at least two changes in the adolescent brain and how they impact adolescent behavior/responses
  • List at least two MI techniques that might help adolescent patients given the unique brain processes at this stage of development

Who Should Attend

Nursing staff in public health systems with a focus on adolescents. Persons interested in helping young people engage in making behavioral changes.
