A Healthy Nevada starts with healthy babies
The Nevada Newborn Screening Program aims to screen all babies for a variety of serious, but treatable, disorders.
What We Do
The Nevada Newborn Screening Program ensures all babies are screened for certain genetic disorders before they can cause serious health problems. Our goal is to identify disorders early so that serious health conditions can be treated and prevented.
Detectable Disorders by Newborn Screening
The Nevada Newborn Screening Program screens infants for over 30 conditions, including metabolic disorders, endocrinal disorders, hematological disorders and cystic fibrosis. Additionally, babies are now screened for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) and X-linked Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD).
Hearing Screening
Every day, 33 babies are born in the United States with permanent hearing loss. The Nevada Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Program ensures all children in Nevada are screened for hearing loss at birth. Our goal is to help those identified with hearing loss with access to timely and appropriate audiological, educational and medical intervention.
