Preferred Specimen

For Dengue and Chikungunya: serum or cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) collected alongside a matched serum specimen

For Zika: urine or amniotic fluid

Specimen Container Serum must be separated from blood clot. Collection tube should not contain preservatives.
Specimen Identification Label tube with patient’s first and last name, DOB and date/time of collection.
Special Instructions
  • Indicate site of collection or source on requisition.
  • Include the date the sample was collected, date of onset of illness, a brief clinical description or the provisional diagnosis as well as any other pertinent clinical information on the requisition.
  • Onset date, specimen collected date, travel dates, and travel location(s) should be included
Shipping Requirements Specimen should be kept refrigerated at 4°C and shipped cold on gel ice-packs. Frozen specimens (less than or equal to -20⁰C) should be shipped on dry ice.

  • Specimen not refrigerated
  • Mislabeled/Unlabeled specimen
