Challenges and Stepping Down

Scully describes some of his experiences and challenges as the school's dean, comparing his tenure to that of Smith's deanship. Conflicts arose over local hospitals and the school in regards to residencies, which was eventually brokered by the middle of 1979. After years of stress, Scully was diagnosed with several kidney and thyroid problems, and took time off to undergo surgery. Although he took some time off to deal with his health problems, Scully said he was confident in the school and the hired professors.

Stepping Down from Dean

In 1979, Scully stepped down from the position of dean, and helped Ernest Mazzaferri become the new interim dean. Scully took nearly six months of sick leave after stepping down before taking on other jobs at the school.
