Nevada State Office of Rural Health

Established in 1977, the Nevada State Office of Rural Health (SORH) works to improve healthcare delivery in the state’s rural and frontier communities—regions that comprise much of Nevada’s land mass and face persistent healthcare challenges due to distance and limited infrastructure. Housed within the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med), the office leverages clinical and academic resources to reach underserved populations more effectively.

The Nevada SORH’s mission centers on expanding access, training providers, supporting healthcare financing, and building strategic partnerships to ensure a healthier Nevada. Through ongoing outreach and technical assistance, the office addresses one of the most pressing issues in rural care: timely access to essential services.

Recruitment & Retention Efforts: Strengthening Nevada's Rural Healthcare Workforce

Access to healthcare in rural and frontier areas of Nevada continues to be shaped by challenges such as limited resources, geographic isolation, and technological gaps. That’s why the recruitment and retention of healthcare professionals—including medical students, residents, and physicians—is a top priority for the Nevada SORH.

The Office works closely with rural hospitals and clinics across the state to connect qualified healthcare professionals with communities in need. Through strategic outreach, personalized support, and workforce development tools, we’re building a sustainable pipeline of providers committed to serving Nevada’s underserved regions.

Public Health Laboratory and Testing Educational Sessions

These sessions serve as a platform for sharing statewide guidance, updates on emerging health threats, and innovations in diagnostic testing and disease surveillance.

National Rural Health Day: Celebrating the Power of Rural

Since 2011, the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health (NOSORH) has designated the third Thursday of every November as National Rural Health Day (NRHD)—a moment to honor and celebrate the vital contributions of rural healthcare providers, communities, organizations, and stakeholders dedicated to improving the health and well-being of rural America.

NRHD shines a spotlight on the Power of Rural—a strength rooted in resilience, ingenuity, and community. It’s a day to recognize the tireless efforts of those working to address the unique healthcare challenges faced by rural populations, while also celebrating the innovative solutions and collaborative spirit that define rural health systems.

Nevada’s Celebration of National Rural Health Day

Each year, Nevada hosts its own special celebration in recognition of NRHD, aligning with that year's national health theme. The event is held on the third Thursday of November in Reno, NV and brings together rural champions from across the state to spotlight local success stories, foster collaboration, and promote awareness about the importance of rural health access and equity.
