Great Basin History of Medicine
The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is committed to research, service and excellence in the teaching of pathology to first and second-year medical students at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine. The Department of Pathology is a community-based pathology department through its partnership with Aurora Diagnostics. The esteemed department was designed to provide clinical education and experience to medical students while broadening access to lab services throughout Northern Nevada and eastern California.
The Department of Pathology along with Aurora Diagnostics not only offers exceptional medical education to students, but a fully functioning lab, consultation from specialists and courier lab service to local physician offices, area hospitals and rural communities.
The collaboration with Aurora Diagnostics was a welcomed relationship as it brings a network of over 100 talented pathologists to review local medical conditions. Not only does it add to the breadth of knowledge students receive, but it also allows School of Medicine scientists access to human tissue through Aurora's Research Institute. This will continue to provide a number of incredible research opportunities for the school.
The Department of Pathology at the School of Medicine is a central hub to innovative research, cutting-edge diagnostic techniques and a collective environment of like-minded doctors and scientists all working to improve health and health care in Nevada.
The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine entered into the School's first affiliation agreement for lab services with Aurora Diagnostics in 2015. Board-certified pathologists work to review specimens and analyze lab and test results. These highly trained specialists also provide consulting services on the severity of medical conditions and educate physicians on the most effective treatment options.
Pathologists at the School of Medicine maintain close relationships with local physicians and specialists in hematology and oncology in order to provide the best patient care. Pathologists instill these strong communication skills into Nevada medical students to ensure future physicians understand the importance of increasing medical knowledge and education in the community.
