Test Scope

Positive test results will be sent for confirmation by HIV-1 / HIV-2 antibody differentiation test and RNA if necessary, at additional cost.

Preferred Specimen 1-3 mLs serum or plasma, minimum 1 mL
Other Acceptable Specimens Plasma (EDTA - Lavender Top, Heparin – Green Top and Citrate – Blue Top)
Specimen Container Red Top or SST Tube, 7-10 mLs
Specimen Identification To ensure confidentiality label tube with coded name designation or appropriate identification number unless patient name is required by state or for billing include patient DOB. Record date and time of collection on tube.
Special Instructions
  • Sample may be stored up to 7 days refrigerated at 2-8° C. If stored longer freeze at -20° C or colder.
  • Centrifuge and remove serum from clot as soon as possible and before storing. Transfer separated serum or plasma into a labeled plastic transport tube.
  • Do not use heat-inactivated specimen.
  • Specimens with precipitate should be clarified by centrifugation.
  • Notify Laboratory if cadaver specimen is collected. Cadaveric serum can be stored for up to 5 days at 2-8°C prior to freezing.
Shipping Requirements Store and ship at refrigerated temperature 2-8° C.
Sample Rejection Criteria
  • Gross Hemolysis or Grossly Lipemic specimen
  • Heat- inactivated specimen
  • Specimen quantity not sufficient for testing (QNS)
  • Mislabeled/Unlabeled specimen
  • Improper specimen transport or storage
