Overview

The purpose of this activity is to improve the clinicians' ability to prescribe opioids in a manner that reduces the risk of addiction and to initiate treatment with naltrexone.

Learning Objectives

Following participation in this course, participants should be able to:

  • Introduce risk reduction in prescribing opioids
  • Discuss how opioids impact the reward system
  • Define opioid use disorder and how to screen for it
  • Discuss the mechanism of naltrexone and how to initiate treatment with naltrexone
  • Conduct the naloxone challenge test
  • Weigh the benefits and risks of naltrexone in the treatment of opioid use disorder
