3rd Annual Pennington Cancer Institute Cancer Conference
Overview
Cancer screening, early detection, and treatment are rapidly changing, with new technologies and therapies being introduced. This year almost 2 million Americans will be diagnosed with cancer. Therefore, it is critical for primary care providers to remain current with guidelines. Understanding the initial cancer therapy is also essential for optimal patient care, as patients often seek information from multiple sources, including their primary providers. This conference will address numerous topics related to common forms of cancer commonly seen and often diagnosed by PCPs.

Learning Objectives
Following participation in this course, participants should be able to:
- Identify current state of multidisciplinary care in Oncology
- Evaluate workforce issues and regulatory issues on the current/future direction of AI solutions
- Review new practice-changing data for all breast cancer subtypes that have emerged within the last year.
- Discuss and examine controversial management issues in hormone receptor-positive early breast cancer patients
- Describe the current management of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)
- Define the targeted therapies for NSCLC
- Report the controversies with eligibility criteria
- Assess the value of Next-generation testing and its significance for selecting therapy in the management of patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC)
- Evaluate efficacy data from practice-changing clinical trials on new and emerging molecularly-directed therapies for patients mCRC
- Outline the current standard of care for bone and soft tissue sarcoma and explain emerging treatments in sarcoma
- Review current management strategies of osseous metastatic disease in the appendicular skeleton and pelvis
- Outline and discuss current services and future goals of the Pennington Cancer Institute
- Review and discuss Lung Cancer Screening and advances in Bronchoscopy and diagnosis
- Contrast differences between population screening and diagnostic genetic testing
- Distinguish between monogenic and polygenic breast cancer risk
- Outline quantitative risk categories of low, normal, and high risks for breast cancer
- Recognize the implications of PSA screening policies on the population and the basis for when to start and stop PSA screening
- Demonstrate the process of Lung, GI, and Breast Cancer tumor boards as panels of cancer experts conduct discussions of real patients to reach a multidisciplinary treatment plan consensus
- Explain the neurobiological challenges for advancing treatment of brain tumors
- Describe the principle mechanism of laser interstitial thermal therapy and its role in treating brain tumors and radiation necrosis
- Describe the role of palliative care in an oncology practice and examine the experience oncology patients will have in a palliative care visit.
