Specimen Container Sterile Screw-cap container or Urine Transport Vial with preservative.
Specimen Identification Label container with patient’s first name, last name and DOB include date and time of collection.
Special Instructions
  • Indicate specimen source on requisition.
  • Include on the requisition whether or not the patient is symptomatic and taking antibiotics.
  • First morning specimens yield highest bacterial counts from overnight incubation in the bladder and are the best specimens. Forced fluids or random specimens dilute the urine and may cause reduced colony counts.
  • Thoroughly instruct patient for proper collection of “clean catch” specimen. The patient should be instructed to follow the directions provided with the urine collection kit.
  • To collect catheterized specimens first clean the catheter port with an alcohol sponge, puncture with sterile needle, and collect in sterile syringe.
Shipping Requirements Store and ship at refrigerated temperature 2-8° C. Transport to lab as soon as possible.
Sample Rejection Criteria
  • >24 hours old from collection refrigerated
  • > 2 hours old at unrefrigerated temperature
  • Urines received in transport media other than urine preservative
  • Mislabeled/Unlabeled specimens
