COI exception requests are requests in advance for an activity that appears to conflict with the UNR Med COI policy. If you are interested in an event involving industry that is prohibited by the COI Policy, fill out a Conflict of Interest Exception request four weeks in advance.
The accountable faculty member can complete an exception request form.
If it involves teaching materials, the accountable faculty member will complete the exemption request form.
COI disclosures are made annually and on an as needed basis on the sponsored projects website.
The accountable faculty member is the person who is organizing and on-site supervision for the activity for which they are requesting an exception. The accountable faculty member is the point of contact with the COI committee. The accountable faculty member reviews and submits all marketing communications related to the activity, all materials that will be distributed at the activity, evaluation of the activity and monitoring adherence to COI policy during the activity
Your disclosure will be shared with the COI Committee, and may be shared with your department chair and the dean of the medical school if additional review is needed.
Industry sponsored lunch meals for residents, students and faculty are prohibited by this policy.
There is no appeal process.
Employees who do not comply with University of Nevada, Reno policies are subject to discipline according to UAM/Chapter 6.
All UNR Med employees who are .5 FTE or greater are required to complete the COA Request process. All UNR Med employees who are less than .5 FTE are required to disclose their COA Request in writing to their supervisor.

Professional scholarly service by faculty members and classified employees within their subject matter field of expertise and for compensation by sources other than University-administered funds. For example: consulting, research, teaching, studies, surveys and training programs. The prior notification requirement also applies to compensated outside activities that result in textbooks, scholarly articles, musical and artistic works, and other forms of education media when the title to the property remains the creator and when these are considered for evaluations for performance, and tenure and promotion. If the COI Committee determines that the risks involved in a COI situation can be minimized to an acceptable level through management, the COI Designated Official works with the employee and others to implement a COI Management Plan, based on the COI Committee’s recommendations. A COI Management Plan Administrator is assigned to implement the plan, monitor compliance and submit status reports. If you are earning equity and not earning income, but the company is active, a COA Request is required.
