Overview
Renown Regional Medical Center is the only designated trauma center between Sacramento and Salt Lake City, serving a vast 100,000-square-mile region that includes Nevada, Lake Tahoe, Eastern California, and Southern Oregon. As a vital lifeline for these communities, Renown treats more than 90,000 emergency room visits and over 4,200 trauma cases annually. It is also home to Renown Children's Hospital, the region's only Level II Pediatric Trauma Center.
This year's Northern Nevada Trauma Symposium will spotlight "The Science of Survival: A Comprehensive Exploration of Trauma from Head to Toe." The program will cover essential topics such as resuscitation fundamentals, patient assessment, treatment priorities, and time-sensitive interventions. Sessions will include the management of head and spinal cord injuries, penetrating thoracic trauma, pediatric solid organ injuries, and the recognition and treatment of compartment syndrome. Attendees will also benefit from clinical insights shared by our trauma pharmacist.
The symposium will feature a compelling case study of a snowboarding accident involving spinal cord trauma, culminating in a powerful presentation by the patient himself, who will share his personal journey through recovery after a life-altering injury.
We will also introduce Renown's partnership with the Trauma Survivors Network, highlighting the meaningful benefits this brings to both trauma patients and the healthcare professionals who care for them.
Learning Objectives
Following the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Review the basics of trauma resuscitation, and identify the assessment priorities, and explain the importance of time sensitive treatments in the initial trauma assessment process.
- Outline the types of traumatic head injuries and examine the priorities of care for management of these injuries.
- Review the management of spinal cord injury patient care to provide the most up to date interventions and treatments that can optimize patient outcomes.
- Examine cases of penetrating thoracic trauma and the interventions required for these patients.
- Review the management of solid organ injuries in pediatric patients.
- Identify the signs and symptoms of compartment syndrome, educate on the importance of early recognition, and review the management for these patients.
- Outline the care provided for the case of a traumatically injured patient, Franz Wall, who will then discuss the impact of the injuries on his life and how he was able to find strength to persevere.
- Describe the benefits that Renown will gain by joining the Trauma Survivors Network and how providers can integrate these into care for the traumatically injured patients.
