Overview

Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is an evidence-based practice aimed at identifying and addressing problematic drug and alcohol use early to promote healthier behaviors and reduce risks to overall health, including oral health. This structured approach involves healthcare professionals, including dental clinicians such as dentists and dental hygienists, assessing patients' substance use behaviors to mitigate risks such as oral cancer and other systemic conditions that affect oral health. By integrating SBIRT into dental settings, clinicians can play a vital role in early detection and intervention while encouraging patients to adopt healthier behaviors. This personalized and preventive approach is highly feasible in dentistry, enhancing comprehensive care and fostering better health outcomes.

Objectives

Following participation in this course, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the rationale for and evidence base supporting SBIRT in dental settings
  • Deliver and interpret a screening tool that could be used to identify risky alcohol and drug use
  • Demonstrate 1-2 brief intervention strategies consistent with a motivational interviewing approach
