Overview

This presentation describes the current national youth mental health crisis and the importance of a comprehensive, cross-system approach to youth suicide prevention. Clinicians will learn the vital role that primary care providers play in screening, brief assessment, safety planning and referral of suicidal youth. Helpful tools for developing office-based youth suicide prevention protocols are provided.

Objectives

Following participation in this course, participants should be able to:

  • Understand risk and protective factors for suicide in youth
  • Be able to identify warning signs that someone may be thinking about suicide
  • List strategies for suicide prevention across a continuum
  • Understand the vital role of primary care providers in screening, brief assessment and referral
  • Know where to access resources to aid in developing a youth suicide prevention protocol for your practice
  • Describe how to develop a suicide safety plan
  • Be familiar with evidence-based treatment for suicidal ideation
