Overview

Resilience is not a fixed trait — it is a learnable, teachable set of skills. This session introduces faculty to a behavioral science framework for understanding and cultivating resilience, grounded in Acceptance and Commitment Training (ACT) and psychological flexibility theory. It also examines how the teaching environment itself — as a behavioral system — can promote or hinder student wellbeing. Participants will explore the psychological and socio-environmental factors that foster wellbeing and shape resilient responding. They will also examine their own role as models of psychological flexibility for students and develop practical skills for recognizing when students are struggling. The session closes with ACT-based experiential exercises that faculty can implement immediately in clinical and classroom settings. No prior knowledge of ACT is required.

This session topic is part of a clinical teaching professional development series presented by the Office of Faculty Affairs.
