Clerkship

UNR Med Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is committed to academic excellence.

Our clerkship is designed as an introduction to the field of OB/GYN, providing students the opportunity to learn by doing and directly interacting with an experienced group of core faculty.

Both our Clerkship Director and co-Director have completed the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO) Clerkship Director Schools and remain actively involved in APGO and other national organizations to provide our learners the most up to date opportunities.

Clerkship Goals and Overview

The goal of the OB/GYN clerkship is to provide each medical student on the rotation with an improved understanding of what is involved in being a physician in this specialty, and  how to compassionately and effectively address women's health across all specialties.

The OB/GYN clerkship at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine is a six-week program during which students will encounter a variety of clinical problems in both the inpatient and outpatient setting. In addition to these direct clinical experiences, there are didactic sessions throughout the week which cover core topics in OB/GYN. These include formal lectures, simulations and experiences interacting with Gynecological Teaching Associates. Students also take part in sessions that address implicit bias in healthcare.

Rotations

During the obstetrical rotation, students will spend time on Labor and Delivery and in prenatal clinics to learn about antepartum and postpartum management and complications. They will be actively involved with vaginal and cesarean deliveries. Rounding on postpartum patients will allow for continuity of care and an improved understanding of an obstetrical patient's hospital course.

On the gynecologic rotation, students spend time in the operating room directly observing surgical management of gynecologic conditions. Preoperative and postoperative care is reviewed. Students also spend time in outpatient GYN clinics, gaining knowledge in women's healthcare.
