Diversity Health Series
The Diversity Health Series is a quarterly lecture series developed for medical students, residents and physicians. The Diversity Health Series was created to provide opportunities for the development of cultural competency in a medical setting. Topics include rural healthcare, disability, unconscious bias and Safe Zone training. Each lecture is worth 1.0 CME.
Working with Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Individuals in Medical Settings
In this session, we will look at Deaf culture, assistive technology, applicable laws, and a short lesson in ASL to help communicate with patients in need.

Racial Disparities Along the Reproductive Continuum

What is the impact of racism and racial inequality on women’s health? In this presentation, we will outline the grim statistics associated with women of color in regards to pregnancy, childbirth, contraception, and access to abortion services. We will outline the current thinking about racism’s role in healthcare disparities, particularly in regards to women’s health. We will describe how legislation has negatively affected the healthcare of women of color. In addition, we will describe efforts to counteract the effect of racism that are underway, as well as what the future may hold for racial justice in healthcare.
Focusing Upstream: Race, Class, and the Enduring Struggle for Health Equity
Dr. Packham’s presentation examines racial disparities in health status in the U.S., as well as strategies to reduce and eliminate health inequities. Particular attention is devoted to the roles that the racial wealth gap and intergenerational transmission of wealth play in understanding racial disparities in health. The discussion concludes with an assessment of the moral determinants of health and recent calls for a morally guided campaign for better health.
Structural Racism in Health Care
Racism has played a role in all aspects of medicine, from medical research to patient health outcomes. This lecture will specifically focus on how racism impacts us as healthcare professionals, and how we can promote an anti-racist healthcare system for the next generation.
COVID-19 Disparities and Northern Nevada’s Response
This panel will share data on current coronavirus disparities in Northern Nevada, explore how systemic racism and social determinants of health have created and amplified these disparities, and discuss how the health care community in Northern Nevada is responding to the disparities in the COVID-19 pandemic.
