Leveling Coursework

The Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology offers leveling or Graduate Special coursework for students who have a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited, four-year educational institution in a major other than Speech Pathology & Audiology or Communication Sciences and Disorders. This leveling coursework prepares students to apply for graduate degree programs in speech-language pathology or audiology. Students may have the classification of Graduate Special or Second Bachelor's. There are two leveling sequences, one for speech-language pathology, and one for audiology.

Speech-Language Pathology Leveling Sequence (two year)

  • SPA 201:  Introduction to Communication Disorders
  • SPA 320: Phoenetics
  • SPA 366: Speech and Hearing Science

Spring

  • SPA 331: Neuroscience for Speech Pathology and Audiology
  • SPA 340: Speech and Language Development
  • SPA 362: Introduction to Audiology I

Year

Fall

  • SPA 330: Anatomy and Physiology of Speech and Language Mechanism
  • SPA 345: Observation of Clinical Services
  • SPA 466: Aural Habilitation and Rehabilitation

Spring

  • SPA 370: Methods of Clinical Management
  • SPA 421: Communication and Aging
  • SPA 467: Communication and Language Disorders in Children

Note:

  • In addition to the leveling sequence, prerequisite course content in biological sciences, physical sciences, statistics, and social/behavioral sciences may be required if they were not included in the student’s undergraduate degree.

Audiology Leveling Sequence (one year)

Fall

  • SPA 366: Speech & Hearing Science
  • SPA 330: Anatomy and Physiology of Speech and Language Mechanism
  • SPA 466: Aural Rehab

Spring

  • SPA 362: Introduction to Audiology
  • SPA 464: Practicum in Clinical Audiology*

*Summer enrollment in practicum is also possible

Please note that requirements for Doctorate of Audiology (Au.D.) programs may differ, including recommended or required coursework. For details about specific programs, refer to their official websites. The sequence outlined above is designed to provide foundation knowledge and enhance a student's application to an Au.D. program.
