Nevada Area Health Education Centers

Office of Statewide Initiatives

The mission of AHEC is to reach out to rural and urban areas with shortages of health care professionals. The AHEC centers serve as the bridge between academic health programs and the community in all seventeen Nevada counties.

Desert Meadows AHEC in Las Vegas, Frontier AHEC in Elko, and High Sierra AHEC in Reno serve as the principal centers for the program and provide continuing education classes, technical assistance, student programs, and distance linkages to enhance practice opportunities for health practitioners.

The Nevada AHEC program is an integral part of the mission of improving the health and well-being of all Nevadan's and their communities. AHECs partner with community-based organizations and health professions training programs to impact the current and future workforce by providing educational opportunities throughout Nevada. AHEC centers statewide (Frontier AHEC in Elko, Desert Meadows AHEC in Las Vegas, and High Sierra AHEC in Reno) serve as the community-based regional centers for the program.

The Nevada Area Health Education Program is supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) under grant number U77HP19810 with 50% financed with non-governmental sources. The contents are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily represent the official views of, nor endorsement, by HRSA, HHS, or the US Government.

Nevada Rural Health Day

The National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health (NOSORH) sets aside the third Thursday of every November to celebrate National Rural Health Day.

Coinciding with National Rural Health Day, Nevada's governor signs a proclamation proclaiming a date in November as Nevada Rural Health Day. The Nevada State Office of Rural Health celebrates Nevada Rural Health Day with a yearly summit to educate rural stakeholders regarding rural health issues specific to Nevada.

Another key component of The Rural Health Day Summit is honoring those who provide care to Nevada's rural citizens.
