Nevada Area Health Education Centers

The AHEC program mission is consistent with a national network of programs to enhance access to quality health care, particularly primary and preventive care, by improving the supply and distribution of health care professionals through federal, state, and community/academic educational partnerships. The Nevada AHEC program is an integral part of the mission of improving the health and well-being of all Nevadan's and their communities. AHECs partner with community-based organizations and health professions training programs to impact the current and future workforce by providing educational opportunities throughout Nevada. AHEC centers statewide (Frontier AHEC in Elko, Desert Meadows AHEC in Las Vegas, and High Sierra AHEC in Reno) serve as the community-based regional centers for the program.

The Nevada Area Health Education Program is supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) under grant number U77HP19810 with 50% financed with non-governmental sources. Nevada AHEC was established by the Nevada Legislature in 1987 and provided additional authorization in 2003. Nevada Area Health Education Centers have offices in Reno, Las Vegas, and Elko to provide services statewide to all Nevada counties.

The AHEC (Area Health Education Centers) program was developed by Congress in 1971 to recruit, train and retain a health professions workforce committed to underserved populations. The strength of the AHEC Network is its ability to creatively adapt national initiatives to help address local and regional healthcare issues. Today, 46 AHEC programs with more than 261 centers operate in almost every state and the District of Columbia. Approximately 120 medical schools and 600 nursing and allied health schools work collaboratively with AHECs to improve health for underserved and under-represented populations.
