Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship

Football Players

This one-year ACGME Accredited Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship is affiliated with the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine, the Department of Family and Community Medicine, the University of Nevada Athletic Department and Nevada Physical Therapy. The program focuses on prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of medical conditions specific to athletes and in exercising individuals. Successful completion of the fellowship allows the physician to be eligible to apply for the CAQ in Sports Medicine. The fellowship is run by Drs. Tony Islas and Mark Stovak. Our physicians are fellowship-trained in sports medicine. Dr. Tony Islas has a special interest in Wilderness Medicine while Dr. Mark Stovak has a special interest in athletes and NCAA-sports.

Curriculum Overview

The Sports Medicine Fellowship curriculum is a dynamic program using both rotational and longitudinal approaches. The heart of our program is our affiliation with the University of Nevada Athletics Program. We ARE the Wolf Pack Docs!

And as a result, we work with our athletes both in the training room and on the field in every sport. In addition, the fellows partner with the faculty during Musculoskeletal clinics during the week based on rotation for a one-on-one musculoskeletal and ultrasound clinical experience. In addition, we offer a wilderness and sports medicine combination. The fellow has a built-in wilderness medicine rotation and has the opportunity to obtain their PADI (Dive) certification as part of our training. This is in addition to 6 weeks of ski clinic experience. We feel our curriculum provides one of the best and most unique opportunities in Sports Medicine Fellowship education. We encourage you to come experience a top tier sports medicine program in the beautiful Reno/Tahoe area.
