Wilderness Medicine Fellowship

This unique 1-year fellowship allows the learner to obtain an expansive understanding of the care of individuals in austere environments. Our fellowship works with a number of partners to provide a wilderness medicine immersion experience that is "second to none". Graduates of this fellowship will have gained advanced skills that are applicable to the fields of wilderness medicine, travel medicine and event medicine. Our fellows will have the opportunity to work in a national park - participate in search and rescue teams, travel and work in Nepal just to name a few of the experiences.

Requirements

Successful applicants must qualify for Board Certification in Primary Care discipline and licensure in the state of Nevada. Applicants must submit a letter of interest, medical school transcripts, copies of USMLE scores and three letters of recommendation to be considered for the fellowship. One of the letters of recommendation must be from the applicant's Residency Program Director. This year the UNR Wilderness Medicine Fellowship will be joining the other Wilderness Medicine Fellowships in the WMS match.

Be sure to look online at the WMS website for the match directions. Match will take place in late October so send your applications in early. We are accepting applications on a rolling basis. For more information email either Adam Bellwood or Brandi Miller with Dr. Islas.

The Fellows main clinical time will be divided between Reno NV (family medicine clinical time) and Great Basin National Park (wilderness medicine experiences). In addition, the fellow will spend a month doing a ski rotation, will get hands on scuba experience, and will get to go to Nepal for a rotation. Also, we will participate in the Wilderness Medical Society meetings and programs during the year.
