Clinical Experiences

The clinical experiences in our Geriatric Medicine Fellowship program fulfill all aspects of the ACGME national accreditation guidelines. While learning with us in Reno, you will have the opportunity to train in government, university and not-for-profit settings. Locations include:

  1. Ioannis Lougaris Veterans Administration (VA) Medical Center Hospital, Clinic, and Nursing Home
  2. Renown Hospital and Clinics
  3. Sanford Center for Aging

The program offers advanced training and mentoring in geriatric medicine. We foster close faculty and program director mentoring of fellows. Experiences are integrated to provide comprehensive training with a focus on:

  1. Inpatient Rehabilitation
  2. Post Acute and Long term care
  3. Outpatient Care
  4. Inpatient Care
  5. Home care
  6. Transitional Levels of Care
  7. Quality Improvement (QI) and Patient Safety
  8. Interdisciplinary Team Skills

In addition to their continuity and consult experiences, fellows are required to a select from a variety of specialty areas relevant to the practice of Geriatrics. Rotations available include Psychiatry, Neurology, Oncology, Pain Management, Endocrinology, Wound Care, Orthopedics, Podiatry and Urology.

All fellows receive education in modern quality improvement techniques and participate on a QI team project as the VA has a strong Systems Redesign Program which focuses on evidence based methods for QI. We recommend becoming a member of the Insititue for Health Care Improvement (IHI) in order to facilitate your QI learning while with us in Reno as the resources developed by the IHI will help you maximize your impact while learning about and improving the care we provide.
