Educational Responsibilities

While in fellowship you should have expectations of the fellowship and the fellowship will have expectations of you. The core of the geriatric medicine fellowship curriculum is based on longitudinal care experiences while you complete rotation based clinical experiences. During these experiences you will be responsible for both your longitudinal continuity patients and your patient load while on your rotation. Below is a general outline of the allotted time for both the longitudinal and rotation based clinical experiences provided within the full year rotation.

Rotation Based Clinical Care Experiences

  • Skilled Nursing Facility
  • Palliative Medicine Consults & Hospice Care
  • Post-Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation
  • Community Geriatrics
  • Psychiatry
  • Neurology
  • Quality Improvement/Safety/Elective

Here at UNR we understand that it takes both well-structured clinical experiences and well-structured didactics to prepare the fellow for any career in geriatrics they wish to pursue. As we foster a culture of knowledge and inquiry we encourage and expect fellows to contribute to both knowledge sharing and quality improvement while in our fellowship. There are weekly didactics provided by members of our academic community (including yourself). We increase our "brain power" by video conferencing with the geriatric fellowship at Stanford/Palo Alto California for our Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) lectures. Didactics are currently scheduled Tuesday afternoons and take priority over most other clinical responsibilities. Below is a list of the required scholarly activities that are expected of the fellow during their fellowship at UNR.

  4. Quality Improvement Project
  5. Academic Poster

Quality Improvement Project opportunities are endless. Although it may seem daunting to successfully complete a quality improvement project in only a year's time, the VA has great resources and you will have access to a dedicated team of geriatric focused health care professionals. The fellow will complete scholarly activity with respect to caring out and presenting QI projects. We encourage fellows to present their academic posters on a regional or national level.

  • Fellows are provided a cellular phone/ allowance for their clinical duties which run from 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM Monday - Friday.
  • Moonlighting is allowed with approval from both program director and graduate medical education dean.
