Letter from the Fellowship Director

Dear Guest:

I am pleased to welcome you to the University of Nevada Reno Geriatric Medicine fellowship training program website. Our mission is to train physicians in the vital specialty of Geriatric Medicine, whose expertise enhances the quality of life of our growing older population.

Our program has been continuously accredited by the ACGME since 2006. Our main training sites are the Reno VA, Renown Regional Medical Center and the Sanford Center on Aging. We strongly believe in the value of disseminating geriatrics knowledge and skills to primary care and specialty physicians as well as to other learners; therefore, our fellows have opportunities to role model, teach and present scholarly activity in geriatric medicine while acquiring the skills to practice independently as a primary care or consulting geriatrician. Quality Improvement training is another strength of our program.

The state of Nevada ranks low in numbers of geriatricians per capita and job opportunities abound for our fellowship graduates. Fellows have been recruited to academic faculty positions, have started innovative new programs, and have been hired by VA and community medical centers for positions in home based primary care, outpatient geriatrics and skilled nursing facilities.

Reno, Nevada is a highly livable community with a mild, four seasons climate, ample recreational opportunities and friendly locals. The fellows enjoy spending their free time exploring the surrounding area, and the co-location of the Hospice Palliative Medicine fellowship allows for a rich educational and social experience.
We are very proud of our program and our graduates and look forward to continuing to prepare physicians with specialized knowledge and skills in Geriatric Medicine. Thank you for exploring our website!

Sincerely,

Helena Russell M.D.
