Peter R. Fenwick, M.D.

Clinical Associate Professor, University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine
State of Nevada Alternate Delegate to the American Medical Association (AMA)

Peter Fenwick, M.D., FAAFP, was one of four original School of Medicine preceptors that began teaching students in 1981 when the school converted to a four-year program. He is the only one of the four who still precepts in northern Nevada, continuing his involvement with the medical school by precepting at the Student Outreach Clinics. Originally from England, Fenwick graduated from the 600-year-old St. Andrews University in Scotland. Following postgraduate training in neurosurgery, general surgery and obstetrics, he volunteered to go to countries with minimal medical care and was sent to Anguilla in the British West Indies. His broad background was quite helpful there as he was the only physician on the island of 7,000 people for a period of two and a half years. Following this, he spent nine years in the Royal Air Force as a Squadron Medical Officer. He then came to Reno in the late 1970s and ended up taking a position as an emergency medicine physician at what was then the Washoe Medical Center, now known as Renown Health. From there, he moved into private family practice for the next 30 years. During that period he was Chief of the Family Practice Department at both major Reno hospitals and spent nine years on the Board of Hometown Health. In 1981, he was approached by the School of Medicine to precept first- and third-year medical students. He was honored in 2007 with the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine's Thomas J. Scully Praeceptor Carissimus Award.
