The VA Medical Center serves as a major training site for our residents, offering exposure to primary care, surgery, mental health services and more. With over 120 beds, you will have the opportunity to support the needs of veterans and their families and caregivers, guided by a knowledgeable and compassionate team who understand the nuances of veteran care.

What is it like to be an intern, resident or fellow at UNR Med?

Hands-on, progressive training experience

At UNR Med, you'll dive into a hands-on, progressive training experience that fosters leadership, skill development and academic success. As a resident or fellow, you will advance through structured postgraduate years (PGY), honing clinical judgment, professionalism and technical expertise from our world-class faculty. Specialties range from three years for primary care to five years for surgical fields. Additionally, we proudly offer a variety of fellowship opportunities for you to attain greater autonomy and mastery in specialized areas.

Postgraduate year 1 (PGY1)

In your first year at UNR Med, you will have the opportunity to work closely with senior level residents and faculty, gaining exposure to a broad range of clinical scenarios. Your role will include taking patient histories, starting IVs, drawing blood, ordering tests and more. You will also assist in surgeries by performing invasive procedures under faculty guidance. This role emphasizes patient-centered care and professionalism, with a focus on developing a robust study and research plan. Communication with patients and families about care plans is essential as you navigate the socioeconomic and cultural factors impacting cost-effective care.

Postgraduate year 2 (PGY2)

In year 2, you will build on your first-year skills with increased independence, including supervising first-year residents and performing more advanced procedures. Your tasks may include performing central lines and chest tubes, managing critically ill patients, handling initial trauma care and leading complex cases with faculty oversight. During this year, you will refine your expertise, take on leadership activities and master effective communication with patients and their families. You will also learn the ethics behind medicine, integrating these skills into patient care.

Postgraduate year 3+ (PGY3+)

In your third year, you will be expected to handle both routine and complex cases, supervise PGY1 and PGY2 residents and coordinate patient care. You will oversee advanced procedures with faculty oversight and showcase your research skills by presenting your findings. By the end of the year, you will be thoroughly prepared to manage leadership roles, perform senior-level responsibilities and pursue specialties with longer training.

In fellowship, you will have the chance to dive into your desired subspecialty under the mentorship of our world-renowned faculty. Fellowship programs build on your core residency skills and focus on mastering the advanced skills of your subspecialty.
