Pediatrics Residency Program
Why UNR Med?
The mission of the Pediatric Residency Program is to improve the health and well-being of all children through excellence in education and postgraduate training that produces leaders in medicine, clinical care, patient safety, innovation and research. With a focus on treating underserved patients in the Northern Nevada community, you will have the chance to make an impact locally.
We are proud to have long-standing relationships with Renown Health, community partners and other agencies that work directly with children. These partnerships allow us to offer a comprehensive curriculum that combines hands-on experience with academic excellence to support the development of future pediatricians.
By fostering a diverse and multidisciplinary team environment, you will provide evidence-based, quality, safe and compassionate care to patients both during your residency and as board-certified physician. Under the guidance of knowledgeable and experienced mentors, residents have the opportunity to gain exposure to primary care practice, fellowship training and academic roles.
Salary Schedule
UNR Med deeply values our residents’ commitment by offering competitive salary and benefits packages. With no state income tax, Nevada residents can expect to receive a higher net salary compared to resident programs in other states.
Resources
UNR Med is committed to supporting our residents with the resources needed to ensure a successful and rewarding experience over the duration of your training.
Handbook
The Resident Handbook outlines the policies and procedures of the residency program. Residents are expected to comply with these policies to ensure that all residents are working in a fair, supportive and equitable environment.
Curriculum
The UNR Med Pediatric Residency offers a balanced schedule between inpatient and outpatient rotations. This residency offers flexibility that will allow you to build a personalized educational experience that fits your goals and subspecialty interests. The schedule has 13 blocks per year, with each block made up of four weeks of academic and hands-on learning. Our curriculum follows the American Board of Pediatrics Certifying Exam Content Specifications with a structure that is theme-based for each block.
As a resident, you will gain experience in a variety of subspecialties including pediatric cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology and more. Offering numerous clinical sites, you will have access to state-of-the-art equipment and faculty to enhance the skills needed for quality clinical practice.
The UNR Med Pediatric Residency is a close-knit team of leadership, faculty and residents from different backgrounds and experiences. We are a small program with a large ratio of faculty-to-residents that provides a supportive, hands-on and personalized educational environment. Additionally, wellness is not just a box to check-off, but a mindful goal that we strive for with the assistance of our two wellness advocates, Anamaria Manea, M.D., and Whitney Woodhull, M.D.
We have three clinical training sites:
Renown Children's Hospital
As our primary teaching hospital, Renown Regional Medical Center will be the primary facility for residents to gain clinical knowledge and experience. Renown Children’s Hospital is the only children’s hospital in Northern Nevada, offering 98 inpatient beds and serving over 20,500 children and their families each year.
Primary Children's Hospital
We are proud to have a strong partnership with the University of Utah School of Medicine which acts as the main facility for the Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics rotation. This educational experience at the Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City is required for all pediatric residents.
Children’s Heart Center Nevada
The Children’s Heart Center of Nevada (CHC) offers the Pediatric Cardiology rotation, which is mandatory for all residents. During this rotation, you will learn about various cardiology evaluations and services including transthoracic echocardiograms, interpretation of EKGs, pacemaker interrogations and more.
