Resident Eligibility and Selection

Eligibility

Applicants with the following qualifications are eligible to apply for appointment to ACGME accredited residency programs: 

  1. Medical Education 
    Applicants must provide proof of completion of the requisite professional education. This includes proof of the following status as graduate (or pending graduate) of:
    • United States and Canadian medical schools accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME)
    • United States colleges of osteopathic medicine accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA)
    • Graduation from a medical school outside of the United States, and meeting one of the following additional qualifications:
      • holds a currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates prior to appointment; or,
      • holds a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a United States licensing jurisdiction in his or her current ACGME specialty/subspecialty program.
  2. Continuity & Step Requirements
    • No more than five years can have elapsed since graduation from last formal medical education training or the individual MUST have a full unrestricted license to practice medicine in the United States and have practiced under this license within the previous two years.
      • GMEC must review and approve of exceptionally qualified candidates for resident/fellow appointments who do not satisfy the Sponsoring Institution’s resident/fellow eligibility policy.
    • All Applicants must have USMLE or COMLEX Step 1 and Step 2 passed on no more than 3 attempts, with all parts of Step 2 completed and passed prior to ranking.
    • Some programs may have more specific criteria; please check with the program to which you are applying for more detailed information.
  3. Licensure 
    Applicants must have the requisite education to secure an appropriate license in the State of Nevada.
    • Applicants for ACGME accredited core residency/fellowship programs must have the requisite education and certification to secure the appropriate medical license in the State of Nevada.

Applicants failing to meet the requirements as outlined above before the date identified on the Graduate Medical Education Agreement of Appointment/Contract are not eligible for the current academic year. Exceptions must be approved by the DIO.

Selection

  • Programs select residents from among eligible applicants on the basis of their preparedness, ability, aptitude, academic credentials, communication skills, and personal qualities such as motivation and integrity.
  • UNR Med does not discriminate with regard to gender, gender identity or gender expression, race, age, religion, color, national origin, disability, veteran status, or sexual preference.
  • All applicants must have sufficient written and spoken English language skills required for safe and effective patient care, and effective participation in training and educational activities.
  • Residents are selected for appointment to the program in accordance with institutional policies and procedures.
  • Residents shall be selected for appointment in accordance with program accreditation requirements. When specifically required by the accrediting body or when selection criteria are more specific than outlined by the accrediting body or by this policy, program-specific selection policies shall be maintained.
  • All applicants must submit all required documents for ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service) or other applicable application service.
