Limitation of Alcohol Policy for Events

To whom this policy applies

All University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine ("UNR Med") employees, faculty, volunteers, students, guests, and external partners hosting events on behalf of UNRMed.

Purpose/Background

UNR Med supports a safe, inclusive and professional environment at all UNR Medevents. The policy aligns with and supports health principles consistent with our vision of A Healthy Nevada.

This policy establishes limitations of alcoholic beverages at events that utilize Universityfunds or are located at university-owned. leased or managed spaces Examples of eventsinclude, but are not limited to, academic, administrative, learner and departmentalevents, conferences, workshops, trainings, and ceremonies.

Policy

UNR Med prohibits the purchase or provision of alcoholic beverages at any event that:

  1. Uses University funds, including state funds, self-supporting accounts, grantfunds, Foundation accounts, or any UNR Med controlled financial resources.
    OR
  2. Takes place in university-owned, leased, or managed spaces including UNR Medcampus facilities, clinical education spaces, or research facilities.

Events may not include alcohol either directly (served to attendees at the event) orindirectly (cash bars, drink tickets, or contracted service).

Compliance

Failure to comply with this policy may result in:

  • Denial of event approval or space reservation
  • Cancellation of the event
  • Referral to the appropriate supervisor or administrative authority
  • Loss of future event hosting privileges

Exceptions

  • Hosting meals of guest speakers, visiting scholars, recruits, donors, or alumni hosted at non-University owned, leased or managed spaces.
  • UNR Med–accredited Office of Continuing Medical Education events may serve limited alcoholic beverages when incidental to the educational purpose (e.g., receptions or meals tied to the program). Only external funds, such as registration fees or sponsorships, may cover these costs. Events on campus must comply with UAM 5,313.
  • Events hosted at locations which serve alcohol where UNR Med does not control the sale or service of alcohol (e.g. casino, restaurant), personal alcohol purchases at such locations are permitted. 
  • Events hosted by outside/third party organizations which garner attendance from the UNR Med community including faculty, staff, residents/fellows, and students and for which University funds are not used to purchase the alcohol.
  • Additional exceptions must be approved in advance by the Senior Associate Dean, Administration and Finance and/or delegate.
