Simulation Consortium of Northern Nevada

Improving patient outcomes through real-world learning

The Simulation Consortium of Northern Nevada (SimCoNN) is a collaboration between the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med), the Orvis School of Nursing and Renown Health. Together, we provide hands-on, practical learning opportunities for students through simulated experiences with high-fidelity manikins, task trainers and standardized patients. SimCoNN aims to improve patient outcomes through quality, high-level training in a supportive and controlled environment.

Our Mission

SimCoNN exists to foster excellence in healthcare simulation through development and delivery of evidence-based experiences for health care learners, medical residents and community clinicians.

Our Vision

We strive to be a dynamic hub for excellence in clinical simulation and education in Northern Nevada, where collaboration, innovation and a commitment to patient safety drive our actions. We are committed to developing a highly skilled and compassionate health care workforce.

What We Do

SimCoNN is comprised of three simulation centers housed in four separate locations: The UNR Med Simulation Center located at the UNR School of Medicine Main Campus, the Orvis Simulation Lab located at the Redfield Campus and the Renown Simulation Lab with two locations at the Helmsley Center and the Renown main hospital. Each location has a team of talented, experienced faculty who are passionate about teaching through simulation.

The members of SimCoNN provide health care students of all levels with experiential, scenario-based learning in a variety of simulation settings. These scenarios may encompass a wide array of subjects and incorporate interprofessional experiences. Students will benefit from both real-world simulations and formal debriefings of each event.

Equipment and Technology

Members of the consortium maintain state-of-the-art medical simulation equipment utilizing the latest technology, including, but not limited to:

  • Laerdal SimMan3G+
  • Laerdal SimMan3G
  • Laerdal SimBaby
  • CAE Lucina

Additionally, the UNR Med Simulation Center has patient exam rooms and a large pool of standardized patients who are trained to portray cases.
