Diabetes Self Management

Registration Information

Cohort Series | Offered Annually | 6 Sessions | Tuesday | 12 - 1 PM Pacific Time 

This series will assist Community Health Workers (CHWs) in Nevada with support in helping their clients who live with diabetes in developing and maintaining self-management skills when it comes to managing their diabetes. We will discuss tools, resources, and strategies to support NV CHW’s as they support their clients living with diabetes. The planned curriculum will include topics around healthy eating when eating out and self-management skills like monitoring blood sugars, foot care, eye care, and how to handle sick days. We will discuss resources so that the NV CHWs has a good understanding of how to support their clients live their best life despite having diabetes. We will be using case-based learning as the main part of this ECHO program and invite all CHW’s with an opportunity to discuss strategies and tools that they can use to help their clients. The specific CHW skills that will be addressed during this program include: Advocacy Skills, Communication Skills, Promoting Healthy Lifestyle/Health Eating Active Living, Individual and Assessment Skills, and Community Capacity Building. 

Our team

  • Karmella Thomas, RD, CDE. Karmella trained at the University of Nevada, Reno, in both biology and nutrition. She has a certificate of Specialized Training in Adult Weight Management from the American Dietetic Association She also earned the Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) credential in June 2012.
  • Maricres Crisler, Director of Clinic Operations. FirstMed Health and Wellness. Maricres Crisler is currently employed as Director of Clinical Operations at FirstMed Health and Wellness in Las Vegas, an FQHC who takes great care of the underserved population. She earned her Bachelors degrees in Biology and Nursing as well as an MD in the Philippines.

Continuing Medical Education (CME) Accreditation

The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine is a provider of continuing education credit through the Nevada State Board of Pharmacy.  This program is approved for 1 hours of continuing education credit for pharmacists.

The Nevada Certification Board for Community Health Workers has approved this training for 1.0 hours of CEUs per session.
