Wilderness Medicine Scholarly Concentration

The Scholarly Concentration in Wilderness Medicine at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med) expands beyond the traditional medical curriculum, providing in-depth exposure to medical practice in extreme, remote and resource-limited environments. Students will develop essential skills for diagnosing and treating injuries and illnesses encountered in these challenging settings, while also preparing to manage medical logistics for wilderness expeditions. The concentration culminates in a scholarly project that advances knowledge in the field of wilderness medicine.

What will students learn about in this program?

  • Heat illness and cold injuries
  • Hypothermia and cold-water immersion
  • High altitude and lightning injuries
  • Wilderness trauma and zoonotic diseases (bites, stings)
  • Travel and expedition medicine
  • Search and rescue operations
  • Natural disaster management

This program not only provides extensive hands-on experience in wilderness environments but also offers opportunities to attend specialized electives, participate in conferences and engage in community outreach. Students are encouraged to explore their specific interests through research, culminating in a scholarly project or publication.
