The Wilderness Medicine Fellowship at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med) offers a unique opportunity to dive into the world of wilderness medicine. Clinical time will be divided between Reno, Nevada and Great Basin National Park to obtain an expansive understanding of caring for individuals in harsh environments. Our fellowship works with a number of valued partners to provide a comprehensive wilderness medicine immersion experience that is second to none. Located between the high desert and High Sierra, UNR Med is a prime location for becoming a leading physician in wilderness medicine.
Clinical time will be divided between Reno, Nevada and Great Basin National Park. You will learn family medicine and wilderness medicine skills to offer safe and high-quality care to patients in severe conditions. These advanced skills can be applied to the fields of wilderness medicine, travel medicine and event medicine. By the end of the program, you will have advanced knowledge in areas such as environmental exposure, wilderness trauma, aquatic medicine and more.

Curriculum
The Wilderness Medicine Fellowship curriculum combines diverse clinical experiences across multiple settings, including family medicine in Reno, Nevada and wilderness medicine at Great Basin National Park. Fellows will participate in a six-week ski medicine rotation, hands-on scuba experience, and an international rotation in Nepal.
The curriculum also includes participation in Wilderness Medical Society conferences and specialized didactics to enhance your skills in wilderness, travel and austere medicine. Our program's schedule is structured to offer a balance of clinic time and immersive field experiences throughout the year. This will provide you with a comprehensive and dynamic training experience to pave the way for a successful career as a physician.
Application information
Applicants to the Wilderness Medicine Fellowship must be eligible for Board Certification in a Primary Care discipline and have a Nevada medical license. Required application materials include a letter of interest, medical school transcripts, USMLE scores, and three letters of recommendation, with one from the applicant's residency program director.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Interested applicants are encouraged to apply early. The Wilderness Medicine Fellowship participates in the Wilderness Medical Society (WMS) fellowship match. The WMS match occurs in late October.
