Medical students at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med) have many diverse specialty interests. Some students have a specialty in mind in Year 1; others will not decide until later in their medical education. • Continue to strengthen academic performance: Your second year is crucial for preparing for the USMLE Step 1 exam. Focus on building a solid foundation by leveraging resources provided by UNR Med, faculty and administration to ensure your best performance.
• Engage in research: Research experience enhances your application, especially for competitive specialties where programs often look for applicants with a research background. Consider participating in research projects to strengthen your CV and demonstrate your commitment to the field.
• Exploring specialties: With clinical rotations around the corner, take advantage of this time to explore various specialties. Building contacts within these fields now can open doors to future research opportunities or potential letters of recommendation.
• Connect with a clinical mentor: A mentor in your specialty of interest can offer invaluable guidance, sharing insights on career paths and how to best prepare for your chosen field.
