Immunization Requirement Policy

Approved by Student Promotion and Conduct Committee 03/06/2025, effective 08/04/2025 and for the matriculating class of 2026

To whom this policy applies

Any student in University of Nevada Reno, School of Medicine programs that include curricular and/or co-curricular patient care activities.

Definitions

Clinical affiliates: Those institutions providing medical education in conjunction with a medical school to provide clinical experiences for its medical students.

Matriculation: Formal enrollment in a degree program or course of study.

Enrollment: Officially registered as a student.

Purpose/Background

Immunizations are an important part of medical student requirements, to protect the health of their patient and to maintain their own wellness. Regular immunizations and documents are a requirement for all medical students at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine. Keeping immunization records up to date are an important part of the professionalism required of all students at the school.

Policy

The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine follows guidelines issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) along with those of relevant Nevada state agencies and our clinical affiliates. Vaccines required for all medical students prior to June 1 of the year of matriculation are listed below. Students are required to provide documentation of vaccination and/or titer evidence of immunity to these diseases using the AAMC Standardized Immunization Form.

At a minimum, the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine complies with Nevada Administrative Code (NAC) in relation to the State of Nevada vaccination requirements. This policy is subject to change as the NAC may be updated/amended.

Required Immunizations and Documentation of Immunity Prior to Matriculation

  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis vaccine series
  • Polio vaccine series
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (2-dose) vaccine series
  • Varicella vaccine series **
  • Hepatitis B vaccine series (3-dose) or Hepatitis adjuvant (2-dose) *
  • QuantiFERON Blood Test - within three months of matriculation
  • COVID-19 vaccine series (UNR Med will require completion of the initial COVID –19 vaccine series at this time)

* A quantitative titer is required. The titer must demonstrate a numerical value of immunity. Qualitative results are not accepted.

** A quantitative titer is only required for those who have previously tested positive for chickenpox disease.

Annual Health Requirements

These requirements must be updated annually prior to enrollment at a deadline provided by the Office of Student Affairs.

  • Annual one-step tuberculin testing or Quantiferon blood test
  • Annual Flu vaccine
  • Booster vaccinations as required

Students who fail to complete the required immunization and screening requirements will be ineligible to matriculate. After matriculation, failure to maintain required immunizations will result in a hold placed on financial aid and/or a hold on continued enrollment at UNR Med. Enrollment delays caused by failure to maintain required immunizations may impact academic progression, require a meeting with the Associate Dean of Student Affairs, and may result in disciplinary action up to and including dismissal in accordance with the Medical Student Discipline, Dismissal, and Due Process Policy.

*Year 4 Electives and Away Rotations

Medical students may be required to obtain other immunizations or titers to satisfy requirements of other medical schools or clinical institutions when applying for electives for the 4th year of medical school. Please contact the School of Medicine Registrar for assistance in determining these requirements.
