Family and Community Medicine
About us
The Department of Family and Community Medicine provides medical education and clinical service for patients of all ages and backgrounds. Our faculty and learners’ practice in a variety of settings, including, outpatient clinics, inpatient settings and with community partners. Our ACGME-accredited Family Medicine Residency and Sports Medicine Fellowship programs are highly competitive and provide great training opportunities for learners, including the opportunity to care for University of Nevada, Reno Wolf Pack athletes. The Wilderness Medicine Fellowship includes a unique curriculum including experiences in national parks, international expedition support and adventure sports events in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and Lake Tahoe Region.
Residency program
The Department of Family and Community Medicine supports the highly competitive Family Medicine Residency Program. Many UNR Med family medicine residents continue their training in one of our two fellowships: sports medicine and wilderness medicine. Our residents also work with fellowships from the other departments, including palliative care and geriatrics.
Fellowship programs
The Sports Medicine Fellowship provides training in comprehensive care across the lifespan of the athletes. Our fellows have the unique privilege of caring for University of Nevada, Reno Wolf Pack athletes and covering numerous mass-participation events. The Wilderness Medicine Fellowship takes advantage of the unique geography of Northern Nevada to provide excellent training opportunities for wilderness, frontier and international medical response. The fellowship faculty are nationally known in their fields. Mark Stovak, M.D., has extensive publications in sports medicine and is a former president of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine. Arthur “Tony” Islas, M.D., is the founding director for the Wilderness Medicine Fellowship and has served as president of the Wilderness Medical Society.
Scholarly activity
The development and dissemination of new knowledge is vital to family medicine, for both patient care and medical education. We support faculty, residents and students pursuing individual areas of interest and encourage the publishing of this work.
Patient care
We are proud to be in the clinical affiliation with Renown Health. The University Health Family Medicine Clinic serves as the main clinical site for the faculty and residency teaching practice. Our faculty are committed to the priorities of value-based care, improved health care access and patient satisfaction. Our learners have the opportunity to rotate with and learn alongside a variety of Renown specialists. Many of our graduates who choose to remain in the area continue to work with Renown Medical Group in primary care, urgent care and hospital medicine.
