Support, Guidance and Early Conversation

Meeting the Navigator

A healthy learning and working environment depends not only on clear standards, but on having  trusted spaces to talk through concerns early — especially when situations feel unclear, uncomfortable or difficult to name.

The Navigator serves as a  confidential, neutral and independent support resource  for members of the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med) community. Similar to an ombuds role at other academic medical centers, the Navigator offers  informal guidance and perspective, rather than investigation or decision-making.

What to Expect

Meeting with the Navigator:

  • Is  confidential and informal
  • Does  not automatically initiate a report or investigation
  • Provides space to  talk, reflect and make sense of experiences or observations
  • Helps explore options, resources and possible next steps
  • Respects your  autonomy and choice  throughout the process

You remain in control of what — if anything — happens next.

When might someone reach out?

People often contact the Navigator when:

  • They are unsure whether a situation crosses a line
  • Something feels off, uncomfortable or concerning
  • They want to talk through dynamics related to communication, hierarchy or learning climate
  • They are navigating behavior that falls along the  Continuum of Respectful Behaviors
  • They want guidance before deciding whether to pursue any formal pathway

Early conversation can help clarify expectations, prevent harm and support healthier interactions across the learning and working environment.

A supportive first step

Reaching out for guidance is not an accusation and does not assume wrongdoing. It is one way UNR Med supports professional growth, accountability and care for one another — while strengthening a culture where concerns can be raised without fear.
