Teaching Interests
Dr. Olszewski's teaching occurs in non-clinical and clinical settings. To bridge the gap between knowledge and application, she incorporates the "see one, do one, teach one" pedagogy. In didactic courses, she implements multi-modality activities to practice content knowledge. She also uses current technology in her courses such as online platforms, blogs, discussion boards, videos, and audio/visual supports. In the clinic, she mentors graduate student clinicians who deliver diagnostic and therapeutic services that focus on language and literacy skills. She uses the DEAL framework to encourage all of her students to use critical thinking skills.
Research
Dr. Abbie Olszewski conducts research regarding clinical skill development for speech-language pathologists with an emphasis in language/literacy and transgender women. She has a particular interest in developing the language and literacy skill of children who are at-risk, culturally and linguistically diverse, Spanish-English bilinguals, Native American, and who have a hearing loss. She involves both undergraduate and graduate students in her research.
