Psychiatry and Behavioral Residency Program

Why UNR Med?

The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med) Psychiatry Residency Program is designed to transform the future of behavioral health care with resilient, capable and empathetic psychiatrists. We are proud to work with talented residents and faculty who are passionate about caring for individuals and families across the lifespan. Our curriculum prioritizes the integrated skill acquisition and application of knowledge across the biological, psychological and social domains of psychiatric practice.

This residency program offers a range of activities in tandem with a variety of diverse clinical institutions. Together, we provide a challenging, comprehensive and stimulating educational experience with a focus on prevention, early intervention, community-based experiences, outpatient work and comprehensive care. Located in-between the Great Basin and the High Sierra, the region offers opportunities to work in urban, suburban and rural populations.

Offering numerous foundational training experiences, you will have the chance to participate in the development and implementation of educational, clinical and scholarly programming as well as tailored experiences focused on your interests. As a medium-sized program, we ensure that you will have a strong support system of other residents and faculty that work closely together in a highly engaged and inclusive group.

Salary Schedule

UNR Med deeply values our residents’ commitment by offering competitive salary and benefits packages. With no state income tax, Nevada residents can expect to receive a higher net salary compared to resident programs in other states.

Resources

UNR Med is committed to supporting our residents with the resources needed to ensure a successful and rewarding experience over the duration of your training.

Handbook

The Resident Handbook outlines the policies and procedures of the residency program. Residents are expected to comply with these policies to ensure that all residents are working in a fair, supportive and equitable environment.

Curriculum

Since 1999, our ACGME Accredited Residency has offered a comprehensive curriculum across multiple training sites to provide residents with a dynamic and challenging educational experience. We offer personalized learning opportunities with a strong emphasis on prevention, early intervention, community-based experiences, longitudinal continuity clinics and comprehensive care.

Because of our unique location, you will have the opportunity to work with a diverse patient population in urban, suburban and rural populations, all within the same region. Thanks to our long-term partnerships with community agencies and institutions, we serve a diverse population with a focus on reaching underserved communities. In this program, you will be exposed to primary care, psychotherapy and psychopharmacology clinics with limited on-call obligations and the opportunity to choose electives that are tailored to fit your interests.

The UNR Med psychiatry residents, faculty and staff are a diverse group with many interests. We actively work to ensure that this program offers a supportive and balanced culture. Building relationships between other program members and participants is crucial for the program’s success and creating a strong network of future psychiatrists.
