Medical Social Justice Scholarly Concentration
The Scholarly Concentration in Medical Social Justice at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med) is designed for students committed to addressing and eliminating health care disparities through action-oriented research, policy reform and community engagement. This program goes beyond the conventional medical curriculum, offering an opportunity to transform personal passions into impactful scholarship. Students will actively participate in discovering solutions to health care inequities and lead initiatives that make a difference in underserved populations.
What will students learn about in this program?
- Conduct action research discovering solutions to health care disparities
- Disseminate results of research in scholarship, policy change, legislation or community action
- Develop and practice organizational skills in investigation and policy change
- Produce a scholarly work describing actions and outcomes of their effort
- Complete a 4th-year elective course in Public Health or in Spanish for Medical Encounters

Successful students will lead others to investigate and solve health care inequities through direct organization and management, as well as through typical scholarship. Scholarship may consist of published research, case reports, book chapters, policy briefs, white papers, MedEDPortal publications or enacted policy changes.
