The Microbiology and Immunology Department advances basic and translational sciences by studying infectious diseases that cause a substantial amount of morbidity and mortality.
Microbiology and Immunology
About us
The Department of Microbiology and Immunology focuses on advancing the understanding of host-pathogen interactions, immune system function and microbial pathogenesis. Researchers in the department explore how microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses and fungi, interact with the immune system to influence disease outcomes. Our work spans fundamental microbiological research, vaccine and diagnostic development, and the molecular mechanisms underlying infectious diseases and immune responses. The department is committed to translating scientific discoveries into novel strategies for preventing, diagnosing and treating infectious diseases and immune-related disorders. We also manage the Microbiology and Immunology Undergraduate Program at the University of Nevada, Reno offering hands-on research opportunities for students, and providing a chance to contribute to life-saving research while gaining valuable skills.
Training Nevada's future M.D.'s
The Department of Microbiology and Immunology fosters a collaborative culture that values training and education. From the classroom to the laboratory bench, our integrated curriculum offers innovative and hands-on training to prepare the next generation of scientists, clinicians and health care professionals to develop life-saving treatments.
