Surgery
About us
The Department of Surgery ensures that medical students receive advanced, hands-on surgical experience through our partnerships with Renown Health, the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System, Carson-Tahoe and other Northern Nevada hospitals. Third-year medical students receive on-site surgical training with a focus on patient care, pre- and post-operative care, assisting in the operating room and managing patients in acute care settings. Students are also exposed to general surgery as well as a variety of subspecialties including orthopedic surgery, otorhinolaryngology (ear, nose and throat), plastic surgery, neurosurgery and urology.
The department consists of two co-chairs, three surgery clerkship directors and one selective clerkship director to provide core surgical education and coordinate clinical rotations. Our goal is to educate future medical professionals about innovative surgical principles, collaborative leadership and compassionate patient care. Under these principles, we are fostering the next generation of surgeons who will make a difference in Nevada health care.
