Resident Prescription Writing/Medical Treatment Policy

  1. Introduction:
    Residents at UNR Med practice medicine under the supervision of faculty and for the most part practice with a restricted license. Fellows frequently have unrestricted licenses, but still practice under the supervision of faculty. As a group residents and fellows who provide treatment, can write prescriptions for patients they are caring for on assigned clinical rotations.
  2. Policy:
    1. Residents/fellows are able to write prescriptions in the inpatient and outpatient areas for patients for whom they are providing care as activities with in their training program on assigned clinical rotations.
    2. Programs will assist residents/fellows in keeping DEA licenses current as well as Nevada Board of Pharmacy licenses.
    3. Residents/fellows are not allowed to provide treatment including prescription for medication, for someone who is not under his/her care as part of their residency/fellowship program.
      1. This includes hallway consults, grocery store consults, requests for medications by neighbors and/or friends etc. where proper record keeping, continuum of care and patient safety issues would arise. These types of activities are prohibited.
      2. The Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners (licensing board) considers such activities to be unlawful and/or a violation of professional standards.
      3. Residents/fellows who engage in this activity may be subject to disciplinary actions.
