About us

The Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology is dedicated to cultivating Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) who provide collaborative, holistic and patient-centered care. We offer three degree programs to students at every level in their academic journey: B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. Our department is committed to maintaining a high faculty-to-student ratio that allows for highly personalized and effective clinical and academic training.

Programs

Pre-professional bachelor's program (B.S.)

The University of Nevada, Reno offers a pre-professional undergraduate degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology that prepares our graduates to apply to graduate school for further clinical and advanced training in the field.

M.S. graduate program

We offer a two-year M.S. graduate program to students who are interested in pursuing a career in Speech-Language Pathology. Students are prepared for successful careers as speech-language pathologists in a variety of settings such as schools, hospitals, rehabilitation centers and community clinics. Upon completion of the program and passing the Praxis examination, students will have the skills and clinical competencies necessary to begin a clinical fellowship (CF). After the CF, graduates of this program are eligible to apply for the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) from the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA).

Ph.D. graduate program

Our Ph.D. program is designed to produce highly qualified professionals who aspire to work as Speech-Language Pathologists in university, clinic, hospital, research laboratory or school systems. Successful candidates demonstrate general mastery of the field of Speech Pathology with special expertise in at least two areas of the field: articulation/phonology, cleft palate, aphasia, motor speech disorders, language disorders, stuttering, voice disorders, alaryngeal speech and clinical supervision.

Specialty clinics

We proudly offer various interdisciplinary specialty clinics to students who are interested in pursuing a subspecialty in Speech Pathology and Audiology. Our partner facilities include the University Center for Autism and Neurodevelopment and the Northern Nevada Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Clinic. Other specialty services that serve our community include the Nevada Aphasia Center, Northern Nevada Voice and Swallow Clinic, and Gender-Affirming Voice and Communication Clinic.

Scholarly activity

Our research faculty are driven to advance the scientific foundations and clinical application of speech-language pathology and audiology to support local, state and global communities. We are committed to providing accessible and inclusive education and clinical services that reach diverse populations across the lifespan.

Patient care

Renown Health has a dedicated team of specialists who deliver personalized care and support to both their patients and our students. In partnership with Renown Health, we offer clinical services and education that are provided at the Claude I. Howard Speech and Hearing Clinic. Together, we are committed to providing high quality speech-language pathology and audiology services to Reno-Sparks and the surrounding communities.
