Preferred Specimen Serum
Required Specimen Volume 1-3 ml serum, Minimum 1 mL
Specimen Container Red Top or SST Tube, 7-10 mL, separated serum is preferred
Specimen Identification Label tube with patient's first and last name, DOB and date/time of collection. Note acute or convalescent sample type.
  • Acute: 3-10 days after onset of symptoms
  • Convalescent: 2-3 weeks after acute specimen
Special Instructions
  • Centrifuge and remove serum from clot as soon as possible before storing. Transfer separated serum into a labeled plastic transport tube.
  • Sample may be stored up to 48 hours at 2-8° C
  • If need to store longer than 48 hours, serum should be frozen at -20° C, CSF should be refrigerated
  • Specimens with precipitate should be clarified by centrifugation
Shipping Requirements Store and ship at refrigerated temperature 2-8° C if within 48 hours. Store and ship serum frozen if > 48 hours after collection.
