Medicine

About us

The Department of Medicine has served the Reno community and rural Nevada for over five decades, collaborating closely with Renown Health and the Ioannis A. Lougaris VA Hospital. We are proud to enhance these partnerships in order to elevate research, education and patient care to support the needs of our community. To address Nevada's physician shortage, we plan to expand our general and sub-specialty faculty, educate students and trainees, and develop new training programs in specialty areas of need. Additionally, we are committed to community health through programs such as the Healthy Nevada Project and Project ECHO, aimed at improving population health and meeting evolving medical needs locally and regionally.

The Department of Medicine has a culture of inclusivity and support for personal and professional growth. As faculty, we are empowered to elevate the standard of patient care and shape the future of medicine by guiding the next generation of physician leaders.

Residency program

The Internal Medicine Residency Program at UNR Med seeks to train the next generation of physicians in patient-focused, evidence-based medicine of the highest clinical standards. We believe strongly that diversity, equity and inclusion are essential elements in high quality education, clinical medicine and research. Our residents learn in a supportive learning environment that emphasizes clinical excellence, accountability, respect and work-life balance.

Fellowship program

Our department features two highly regarded specialty fellowship programs: geriatric medicine and palliative care and hospice medicine. Fellowship training in cardiology, pulmonary/critical care, and hematology/oncology are currently in development, with more specialties to follow.

Scholarly activity

Research is a cornerstone of medical practice, empowering physicians to provide evidence-based care by interpreting and applying medical literature. All residents engage in at least one scholarly project during their training, a requirement for graduation, with support for a variety of research avenues — from biomedical science to clinical studies and quality improvement.

Patient care

The Department of Medicine is closely affiliated with Renown Health as part of Nevada's first integrated health system, focusing on education, patient care and clinical research. This partnership has enabled the translation of cutting-edge research into innovative treatments, expanding access to clinical trials and improving health care for the community.

Healthy Nevada Project

The Healthy Nevada Project is a large, population health study housed within the Department of Medicine. The study aims to understand relationships between the genome and observable traits and inherited diseases with the goal of improving health outcomes in our community. The study performs whole exome sequencing on volunteers and returns actionable medical results for CDC Tier 1 genetic conditions.

Our team

Our team is a dedicated group of clinicians, educators and researchers, committed to excellence in patient care, education and advancement in research. We are driven by a shared mission to improve community health and well-being while cultivating a diverse and inclusive environment that fosters innovation and learning.
